Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (January 9th, 2019)

The new winter anime season has begun, and it’s time to take a look at what’s available to watch. From what I can tell, it’s a relatively sparse season, though it does feature two series about female air force pilots in skimpy outfits (Girly Air Force and Kōya no Kotobuki Hikōtai). Here’s what I’m planning to check out:

  • The Promised Neverland, a supernatural mystery about an orphanage that holds deep, dark secrets.
  • Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, a romantic comedy about two students who are too proud to confess their love for one another.
  • How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno, another romantic comedy. This one’s about a genius inventor who tries use her creations to confess her feelings to her crush, but fails miserably every time.
  • Revisions, a sci-fi 3D CG anime involving time travel. Netflix is holding this one hostage.
  • Kakegurui xx, the second season of everyone’s favourite anime about gambling and horrifying facial expressions. Netflix is also holding this one hostage.

A full list of new anime premiering this season is available at this link.

What are you planning to check out? Let’s exchange recommendations so we can all watch the best stuff.

And as usual, feel free to talk about what you’ve been reading/playing/watching/eating/listening to lately.

Finally, screw you, Netflix.
