Werewolves 71: The Masque of the Red Wolf – Day One

The “Red Wolf” had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal –the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of a full day.

But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious. When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys.

It was in this abbey, where the iron gates had been welded shut to prevent both ingress and egress, that Prospero threw a magnificent masquerade.

In his imperial suite, stood five rooms. Each of these rooms were unlit save for a strong brazier placed next to the wall. Each brazier was protected by a tinted pane of glass, giving the room a glow which colored everything in the room. In the first, was a deep blue, giving an oceanic feel. The second, a purple pane gave an otherworldly glow to everything inside. In the third, a green pane tinted everything to look sickly. In the fourth, orange was the predominant hue. In the fifth and final chamber, there was a deep red pane which tinted the mostly-black room with a gruesome bloody nature.

As the guests entered the suite, each was offered a mask. Each mask was one of four colors, matching a room’s brazier. Save for the final room, for Prospero, hoping to forget the woes of the outside, had deemed red masks to be unsuitable for his guests.

It was a gay and magnificent revel. The tastes of the duke were peculiar. He had a fine eye for colors and effects. He disregarded the decora of mere fashion. His plans were bold and fiery, and his conceptions glowed with barbaric lustre. There are some who would have thought him mad. His followers felt that he was not. It was necessary to hear and see and touch him to be sure that he was not.

A few revelers were quite struck with Prospero’s personality and thought themselves agents of his will. As such, they identified several members of the nobility who needed to be taken care of. One reveler was not what they seemed at all, taking advantage of the beautiful mask provided by the prince to hide something sinister.

As the first night of the party ended, a member of the nobility had disappeared from his room. As the revelers awoke the next evening and began to prepare for the party, the noble’s body was found. His life gruesomely taken, and a mark branding him a traitor on his forehead.
