Sorry if the thread name excited you, it’s actually named for an old-timey baseball player with two delightful nicknames.
[I just figured this would lead to too many “butt” jokes to be acceptable on a Day Thread.]
As you surely know, today is the birthday of Thomas Lee “Pee Wee” Butts, an excellent all-round star of the (sigh) Negro Leagues.
At 5’7″ and 140 pounds… “after a big meal,” Butts was the smallest player in the league, but played big; he eventually retired with a career .316 average and was known as an excellent shortstop. His relaxed demeanour and effortless fielding also led to the nickname “Cool Breeze.”
Cool Breeze! I love that nickname.
He played with eventual Major League stars Jim Gilliam and Roy Campanella, but never made it to the big time himself, which he attributed to his size and age.
Over a 19-year career, he played with the Atlanta Black Crackers, Baltimore Elite Giants, the Santurce Crabbers, and other teams with less amusing names.
Happy birthday, Cool Breeze / Pee Wee.
And if you’re not into baseball – unlikely, right? – today is also
- Aaron Paul and Peter Stormare’s birthday
- Moldovan Independence Day
- the 135th anniversary of the eruption of Krakatoa, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history.
Don’t say I never tell you nuthin’ interesting.
