Here’s a curiosity that’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime (although according to some sources, it’ll expire at the end of August): Chinese Box is an unexceptional film filmed under exceptional circumstances. It stars Jeremy Irons and Gong Li; its plot is a muddle of stories about Asians and Westerners living in Hong Kong and how their lives intersect. What makes it interesting is that was both set and filmed during the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from the British to the Chinese. The temporary press center for handover coverage that was set up in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong’s covered outdoor escalator system, and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club all make appearances.
