MLB News

• Controversial college pitcher Luke Heimlich, who was once more undrafted and hasn’t convinced a major league club to sign him to a free agent deal, is attempting to head overseas to play professionally. The Lamigo Monkeys of the Chinese Professional Baseball League announced the signing of him to a contract on their Facebook page this past week. After a backlash, the CPBL initially terminated the contract but later announced that Heimlich’s case would be reviewed and if Lamigo could prove his innocence he’d be allowed into the league. As Heimlich plead guilty his chances of being approved are slim as the CPBL has very strict policies regarding player conduct (hey what an idea).

• With a win over Seattle this week, 45 year old Bartolo Colon became the winningest Latin American born pitcher in MLB history (246 wins, passing Dennis Martinez who won 245). After the game Colon spoke of his desire to continue pitching in 2019 (he’ll turn 46 next May) as he wants to pass Juan Marichal for the most innings pitched of any pitcher from the Dominican Republic (he needs 62 innings to get there). While his ERA is an ugly 5.18, he does lead the Rangers in innings pitched (130.2) and walk rate (1.52 BB/9) and may yet draw major league attention again this off-season.

• In a scary bit of reading, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen was sent to the hospital before the team’s game Thursday in Colorado with an irregular heartbeat. Shortly after Jansen was flown back to Los Angeles for further testing as this is not the first time in his playing career that he’s dealt with this condition. The Dodgers will be without Jansen at least through August 20th and the team will reevaluate his health then .

• How about this defensive play from Oakland rookie Ramon Laureano?
