House Republicans moved to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last night. Led by ‘Freedom’ Caucus member Mark Meadows (R, N.C), and Jim ‘Gym’ Jordan (R-Ohio), it is expected to be showdown with House leaders who have started to shy away from such incendiary tactics. Trey “Benghazi” Gowdy (R S.C.), expressed frustration with ‘drama’. The case appears to be built around Rosenstein’s refusal to hand over certain documents relating to the ongoing Special Counsel investigation, Documents that could potentially be leaked to the President’s defense team by bad actors in Congress. Also probably due to some lost pride from the shellacking Peter Strzok gave them a few weeks back.
The measure is unlikely to pass. The lawmakers did not force a vote on it prior to the five week recess. House leadership doesn’t like it and if it’s forced to the floor, may send it to Judiciary to hold it up indefinitely. Worth noting that Jim Jordan has pulled this crap in the past, most recently proposing a resolution of impeachment against former House Speaker John Boehner in July 2015. Which, conveniently, ended with Boehner resigning the following September.
All said it’s probably best to look at it as a gesture. A futile and stupid gesture. Throwing the idea in the air and hope that someone else will do something about it. Maybe conservative groups start pressing their MOCs to come around on it in the next few weeks, maybe Trump sees it as pretext to just go ahead and fire Rosenstein, or the pressure from the situation forces Rosenstein to resign a la Boehner.
For the time being, just remember some of the people who are behind this nonsense: Devin Nunes, Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz
