Couldn’t make it to Comic-Con this week? Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of games to keep your mind off all those autographs you could be getting.
Adventure Time: Pirates of The Enchiridion (PC/PS4/Switch/Xbox One)
When was the last time we had a turn based, ocean sailing RPG? Was Uncharted Waters on the SNES back in 1994 the last one? Nah, it has to be Sid Meier’s Pirates, right, maybe? Well, in any case, we have another one! I assume your ultimate enjoyment of this game will come down to how big of an Adventure Time fan you are, but the trailers look promising enough. Are you looking forward to sailing the oceans and fighting various ne’er-do-well’s? If so please leave a comment below!!
Mothergunship (PC/PS4/Xbox One)
Build any gun you want, no matter how odd looking or unwieldy it might be! There’s a certain subsection of gamers that absolutely adore this kind of stuff, I can’t say I’m one of them. I don’t know if it’s a lack of innovation on my part, but I’d rather just have a gun already made for me that I can go out and shoot stuff with. I suppose the appeal of these is the experimentation aspect of the whole thing, seeing what kind of crazy gadget you can throw together and then revel in its failure or success. Should be a hit among the Gary’s Mod crowd.
Tempest 4000 (PC/PS4/Xbox One)
I don’t really think you need to gussy up the original Tempest to make it look modern, it already looks good enough in my opinion, all this superfluous nonsense takes away from the appeal of the game; to spin around a circle of some sort and blast away at non-descript objects below you. Although, I will say I’m quite enjoying this soundtrack and its Chemical Brothers vibe.
Impulsion (PC) – Releases on Thursday, July 19th.
Made with speed runners in mind, this new first person puzzle game seems to borrow heavily from Portal, including (but not limited to) a silent protagonist, alternating colored gun projectiles, a serious but goofy narrator, “science”, and cake (j/k, but can you imagine?). This looks fairly generic to me, maybe it’ll do something for you that it doesn’t do for me.
Far Cry 5: Lost on Mars (PC/PS4/Xbox One) – I’m not sure anything can make me get back into this game world, but for those of you who enjoyed the game I’m sure you’ll be able to add hours of more fun to this already quite massive open-world game.
Sonic Mania Plus (PC/PS4/Switch/Xbox One) – Last year’s love letter to the 16-bit Sonic games is getting a physical release as well as brand new content in the form of two new characters and a couple of new modes. If you still haven’t picked this up I highly recommend doing so now. Those of you who already own the first game can buy the upgrades for a small fee.
Chicken Assassin: Reloaded (PS4/Switch) – This “…hilarious, strategic, button-mashing, action-RPG” has been on PC since 2016 and is now being ported to the PS4 and Switch. You can probably base your enjoyment of this by your reaction to the title.
Frost (PS4/Switch/Xbox One) – Releases the 17th on PS4, the 19th on Switch, and the 20th on Xbone. Another PC game from 2016 being ported to consoles, this one is a deck building game in the same vein as Dominion and Ascenion. If you know anything about either of those table-top classics then you should probably be stoked about this release, I know I am.
Hand of Fate 2 (Switch) – This “living board game” has been out on other platforms since November of last year and is now making its way to the Switch. If you like digital versions of table top style games then this week is for you.
Naked Sun (Rift/Vive) – What do they call FPS games in VR, shooter games?
Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded (PS4/Switch) – One of the worst games of 2018 was a fighting game/shooter hybrid called Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle, and while the series has a large and dedicated fanbase, the games tend to be trite garbage, and if I understand correctly anyone can make a game, anime, etc. using the license. I guess what I’m saying is, when will someone at The Avocado make their own game using these characters?
The Mooseman – (PS4/Switch/Xbox One) – Releases July 18th. Yet another PC port coming to consoles! I feel like there are probably 3 or 4 of these a week. Should I just give them their own section? Anyway, this game looks very pretty and very indie.
Arcade Archives: City Connection (Switch) – Releases July 19th. Normally I don’t call these out because it just makes this too long, but I love this game so much that I had to let you all know it was coming out.
Lost Phones Stories (Switch) – Releases July 19th. This week’s “mobile game ported to the Switch” game! I certainly feel like I should make this its own section every week, as they just keep cranking these out. Technically this game is already out for the Switch as A Normal Lost Phone, but this is the added content that came out and is now available all bundled together.
Tanzia (Switch) – Releases July 19th. This RPG is still in early access on Steam, but it must be so good that they decided to port it to the Switch before its even been finished!
