New Game Releases 07/03/18

It’s a holiday week here in the United States and the game release slate seems to reflect that. Not a whole lot is coming out, and the stuff that we’re getting is mostly just ports and re-releases. Don’t worry, things will pick back up next week, so for now, maybe finish that game in your back catalogue that you keep meaning to get around to. You know the one.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Remastered (PC/PS4/Xbox One)

The most high profile game of the week is a remastered version of the now 8 year old FPS game made originally by Volition for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. I’ve only played ‘Aramageddon’, and not for very long, so I really have nothing to go on here. Was this game so beloved that it demanded a remaster? It looks like every other FPS game set in a desolate wasteland, complete with explosions, tactical vehicles with guns mounted on them, and a burly dude with no hair. Good news for owners of the original game on PC, you’ll get a copy of the remaster for free! Oh, and fun fact, the original Red Faction was released on the N-Gage; remember the N-Gage?

Flat Heroes (PC/Switch) – Releases on Thursday, July 5th

This minimalist puzzle/action game has been on Steam since 2016 as an “early access” title and it looks like they are ready to fully launch. You play as a colored square, jumping around and dodging various hazards in an effort to be the last player standing. It looks like a combination bullet-hell/Tron light cycle game with a bunch of the types of things we’ve come to see in other recent hair pulling puzzle/action games like Super Meat Boy, Celeste, Sound Shapes, VVVVVV, and the like. However, you combine that with multi-player and you might have a new dorm room favorite.

Another World (Switch) – Releases on Monday, July 9th

We’ll see.

Everything else:

Mushroom Wars 2 (Switch) – Releases on July 5th. This week’s “mobile game being ported to the Switch” game! Command an army of mushrooms, collecting resources, capturing enemy buildings, and wiping out your opponent! It won ‘Best Strategy Game’ at WNConf in 2016, so this shit is the real deal.

Runbow (PS4/Switch) – A re-release of the 2015 action/puzzle game, but comes out two days EARLIER than Flat Heroes, so if you want your frantic multi-player mayhem on July 4th then here’s your chance.

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr (PS4/Xbox One) – Releases on July 5th. If you didn’t pick this up on PC last month then now is your chance to get in on this action RPG that is apparently quite fun and engaging. This could be a sleeper hit, I say give it a chance.
