The Friday Politics Thread is in Mourning

Well, here’s your faithful backup politics poster Sokudoningyou, with what would have been a funny headline post, probably with this image:

But for this one, there’s no getting away from the fact that the world is continuing to hit us as we’re all down. Celebrity suicide (and that of the normal people who don’t get wall to wall coverage) is going up. This is another issue that affects everyone, of every race, creed, and country.

“Suicide rates have increased in nearly every state over the past two decades, and half of the states have seen suicide rates go up more than 30 percent.
Suicide is a major public health issue, accounting for nearly 45,000 deaths in 2016 alone,” said NPR just yesterday. The fashion designer Kate Spade was the first this week; today, we’ve found out that Anthony Bourdain has been the next. Which is a great shame for a man who has been not only a sarcastic ass, but someone willing to bring attention to those people who are otherwise overlooked by the US; an episode filming in Lebanon years ago just as the war broke out was an unflinching look at what was happening, even as he and his crew were in danger.

This is your Friday Politics Thread.

If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (En Español: 1-888-628-9454; Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 1-800-799-4889) or the Crisis Text Line by texting 741741.

Mayor McSquirrel rule is still in effect.
