Jeopardy! recap for Fri., May 11 – Although they didn’t know it, all three of these players could advance to the next round of the Teachers Tournament with scores of over $5,600:
– Ranjani, 10th and 11th English from Friendswood, TX, who coaches model United Nations;
– Steve, 9th and 10th math from Midvale, UT, who has a special teacher who inspired him; and
– Jake, K-12 gifted and talented from Eureka Springs, AR, whose students blocked his loudspeaker with scotch tape.
Going into FJ, only Jake with $18,200 could be comfortable that he had already enough to advance. Ranjani, who cost herself with a pair of incorrect guesses late and ended DJ at $12,000, and Steve with $10,600 had to decide their FJ wagers carefully.
DD1 – SHE DID IT! – She won gold in track & field at the 1932 Summer Olympics & was the leading money winner in women’s golf, 1948 to 1951 (Steve won $1,000)
DD2 – SHAKESPEARE’S PEOPLE – He calls himself “his Moorship’s ancient” (Ranjani won $2,000 as she ran the category to open DJ.)
DD3 – THE STARS – This constellation known as “the Chained Lady” contains the nearest spiral galaxy to our own (Ranjani won $2,000)
FJ – U.S. POLITICAL HISTORY – President Madison is credited with the 1st of these 2-word actions; he didn’t sign an 1812 bill after congress had adjourned
Only Steve was correct on FJ, adding $6,000 to win with $16,600. Jake made a small bet as expected of $2,000 to earn a wild card with $16,200.
Sadly for Ranjani, that pair of late mistakes after she had climbed to $15,600 likely cost her a wild card spot, as she dropped by $8,000 to $4,000, missing the cutoff by just $1,600.
Ranjani’s $8,000 FJ wager was unnecessarily large, as historically a bet of about half that much would have almost certainly have been good enough to advance if correct, while greatly improving her chances if she missed.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one recalled the five-letter word for copies that also means “the same” with the addictive smell, “ditto”.
DD1 – Who was Babe Didrikson Zaharias?
DD2 – Who is Iago?
DD3 – What is Andromeda?
FJ – What is a pocket veto?
