Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Apr. 24 – Let’s meet today’s contestants:
– Alyssa, a bookseller from Waupaca, WI, who has started writing a lot of books;
– Randy, a fragrance specialst from Houston, TEXAS!!!, who bought a 1965 Mustang at age 13; and
– Kate, a social worker from Somerville, MA, who recommends having a first date at a cemetery. Kate is a one-day champ with winnings of $28,799.
Good two-way battle between Kate and Randy, who were neck-and-neck all the way, separated by just $100 going into FJ with Kate at $15,900, Randy with $15,800 and Alyssa at $5,600.
DD1 – ALL GOOD THINGS – Founded in 1971, this voluntary medical group has been doing good works globally ever since (Randy won $2,000)
DD2 – LITERATURE ON THE MAP – “Kite Runner” Amir lives in the Wazir Akbar Khan district and takes part in the kite competition, all in this city (Randy won $1,800)
DD3 – DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNERS – He’s better remembered for signing an infamous redistricting bill while governor of Massachusetts (Kate won $900)
FJ – AFRICA – Markers for this geographic designation are on Lake Victoria’s Lwaji Island and at Mbandaka in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Only Randy was correct on FJ and he seems to like even numbers, adding $4,200 to win with $20,000. Note that Alyssa was writing furiously at the end and only got halfway through the correct response, but still got second with $1 as Kate bet everything.
Wagering strategy corner: All three DD wagers were too small. Randy knew he was up against a talented opponent and needed to build a larger lead than his bets of $2,000 and $1,800 would allow. Also, Kate should have bet enough on DD3 to ensure the lead going into FJ instead of just gaining a $100 edge with two clues remaining.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew that a villain’s underling is called a “henchman”.
This day in Trebekistan: Alex showed off his vast knowledge by telling us that Africa is a “big continent”, but missed out on his coveted chance to correct Kate’s pronunciation of Gerry as she said the name properly.
DD1 – What is Doctors Without Borders?
DD2 – What is Kabul?
DD3 – Who was Gerry?
FJ – What is the Equator?
