Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Mar. 16

Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Mar. 16 – Here are today’s contestants:

– Rahul, a data engineer from Midlothian, VA, whose scholastic quiz bowl coach was on Jeopardy!;
– Dan, a math professor from New York, NY, who at camp won the “most scatological” award; and
– Peter, a software salesman from Elmhurst, IL, who turned to gymnastics to try and overcome acrophobia. Peter is a two-day champ with winnings of $51,000.

Rahul tried to open a huge lead on DD2 but missed, then recovered to wind up with exactly double of Dan’s score, heading into FJ with $12,400 vs. $6,200 for Dan and $4,000 for Peter.

DD1 – BOOK TALK – This adjective is used for a shortened version of a written work that still contains the basic story (Dan lost $2,000)

DD2 – IN A STORM – When tropical storms threaten, the National Hurricane Center HQed in this city jumps into action (Rahul lost $4,800)

DD3 – MOUNTAINS – Mount Masada, site of a famous fortress in the Judean Desert, overlooks this body of water (Peter won $2,000)

FJ – MYTHOLOGICAL BEASTS – Hesiod said it fawns on all who enter “with actions of…tail and both ears”, but when people try to exit it “eats them up”

Rahul felt good enough about the category to bet $1 and go for the win instead of wagering $0 and risk a tiebreaker clue if Dan was correct and doubled up. As it played out, everyone missed, giving Rahul the victory with $12,399.

Triple Stumper of the day: For a clue about a “fruit grown in Hawaii”, no one took a chance with pineapple.

This day in Trebekistan: After a clue about gutters, Alex commented that his bowling balls usually end up there. If you have Amazon Prime, you can see for yourself if this is true by watching Celebrity Bowling, season 3, episode 22, featuring Trebek and Jim McKrell vs. Dick Gautier and Scatman Crothers.

Correct Qs:

DD1 – What is abridged? (Dan was ruled incorrect with “abridgment”, which is not an adjective as required by the clue. If the rest of the game had played out the same way, with a proper wager on FJ this mistake would have cost Dan the game.)
DD2 – What is Miami?
DD3 – What is the Dead Sea?
FJ – What is Cerberus?
