“Y Tu Ga-Ga Tambien” Bob’s Burgers S8 E9

Bob’s Burgers Season 8 Episode 9
Y Tu Ga-Ga Tambien
Grade: A

After the prolonged absence for the show I’m glad they came through with an expectations shifting episode like this gem.

Confession: I’ve never liked Regular-Sized Rudy. He didn’t seem like a fully developed character to me. So tonight’s episode felt like a step in the right direction in terms of characterizing him better. In fact, there was a lot of character growth on display.

Bob’s Burgers, as per usual thrives under direct conflict, manages to establish a dichotomy of making the conflicts feel substantially silly while also portraying the emotional stakes as intensely as their protagonists feel about them. So having the substantially silly premise of Mr. Frond as a popular dictator figure instituting a quasi-Hunger Games playground mentality where Regular-Sized Rudy reigns as the champion, was a stroke of genius for the show.

Linda’s subplot allowed for a lot of great wordplay (‘The Duchess of Tales!’ ‘Wanda Wordmouth!’) and also… Punky Bookster. Which sidelined Bob for a change (who appeared very happy not to be caught up in the madness for once).

Gene’s shrub sculpture subplot didn’t move me, but his character arc and sentiment as resistance hero sure did.
