This wasn’t a particularly great weekend to be a movie, with few new releases and takes down across the board, but there were a couple bright spots. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle reclaimed the #1 spot with an $11M take, beating last week’s leader, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, by $800K.
They were the only movies to make more than $10M domestically this week, as Winchester – an “inspired by actual events” dud horror movie – opened to just over $9M in 2,500 theaters. The next-highest new film, Bilal: A New Breed of Hero, opened at #26 on just 300 screens.
The other bright spot was The Greatest Showman, which spent another weekend in fourth place, where it will presumably run in perpetuity. It lost only 18% this week, and continues to tread water in just under 2,600 theaters.
