Dear Avocados,
Tonight CBS will air the 2017 Kennedy Center Honors. This year they’re honoring Carmen de Lavallade, Gloria Estefan, LL Cool J, Lionel Ritchie and Norman Lear.
I thought that we could look back on a moment from the 2015 ceremony. It was a good show, with luminaries like Carrie Fisher, Viola Davis, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Renee Fleming, Gina Rodriguez, Lin Manuel Miranda, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, C-3P0 and R2-D2 paying tribute to the honorees.
But there was a reason that The Kennedy Center left the Carole King segment for last.
The roster they assembled to honor her was astounding.
Janelle Monáe, James Taylor, Sara Bareilles, and cast members from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical all killed it performing King’s songs.
And then Aretha Franklin showed up in a fur coat, sat down in front of the piano, and blew the roof off the place.
This is the face Carole King made when she realized what was happening:
Here’s President Obama when Aretha started singing:
Here’s…you know what just watch it. It’s fucking amazing.:
If you don’t want to watch the video, let me summarize. A room of absurdly talented, famous people completely losing their shit over something incredible happening on stage.
The 2017 Kennedy Center Honors air tonight at 9PM EST on CBS. If they don’t perform Deepest Bluest in honor of LL Cool J, I will not be pleased.
Happy Boxing Day!
Also if any of you knows who this dude right behind Carole King is, please tell me because I love him and his facial expressions.
