Things were quiet in this, the last Porg™-free weekend of our lives. The Disaster Artist extended to an additional 821 theaters for a total of 840 in its second weekend. Lady Bird (#9) and Three Billboards (#11) are also still adding theaters, but their week-over-week take is starting to drop.
The highest opening was for Just Getting Started, the Morgan Freeman/Tommy Lee Jones “we’re old now!” comedy, in tenth place. It has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and got a C- review from Ignatiy back in the old country, so prepare for semi-bearable viewing on TBS in a year or two.
I, Tonya, the subject of somewhat higher hopes, opened in 4 theaters, a prelude to the kind of awards season ramped rollout that is now in full force. The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour and The Mountain Between Us all experienced triple-digit gains as their releases expanded. (The Mountain Between Us actually opened 10 weeks ago, but more than doubled its reach this week.)
Things went poorer for Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel (up only 24% despite going from 5 to 47 theaters), Call Me By Your Name (down 1.5% on the jump from 4 to 9 theaters) and The Man Who Invented Christmas (down 22% while up 46 theaters to a total of 720).
