Everyone is Feeling Envy for Inside Out 2’s Success — Box Office Report for June 21st-June 23rd 2024

No need for anyone at Disney to be feeling Anxiety right now. Not only is Inside Out 2 huge, but it’s also leggy, which is the very best kind of huge. If studio estimates hold up, the Pixar sequel made $100 million this weekend, bringing its total to an absolutely amazing $355 million after ten days (well, okay, it’s really been eleven days, as it opened last Thursday starting with mid-afternoon showtimes). It is already the highest-grossing movie of 2024.

What went right here? Well, fucking everything. Even though it opened nine years ago (you are that old), the original Inside Out has clearly enjoyed a long shelf life. You could make a fair case that Inside Out 2, like Incredibles 2, is extremely “safe” as a follow-up. It really doesn’t take any big risks, essentially repeating the plot of the first film, albeit with lower stakes (Will Riley make the hockey team? Will she abandon her annoyingly generic stock “dorky best friends” characters?). Clearly, we’re eventually going to get an Inside Out 3, which I’m hoping involves Riley dealing with falling in love, and down the road we’ll get Inside Out 6 in which the emotions try to navigate Riley’s mid-life crisis.

I’m calling it now. Inside Out 2 is going to maintain its lead next weekend. A Quiet Place: Day One simply won’t be a strong enough release to beat it, while Horizon remains a wild card. There’s also a very real chance Inside Out 2 topples Incredibles 2 as the biggest domestic animated film ever. Look for Wicked to evacuate from its Thanksgiving slot which currently pits it against Moana 2, as I doubt anyone is eager to challenge a Disney sequel at the box office right now.

Speaking of Disney, they were originally going to release The Bikeriders to cinemas last Christmas, but chickened out due to the Hollywood strikes. After that, Focus Feature took over distribution, and with $10 million in the bank this weekend, it’s nice that they have a movie that people are actually, you know, seeing for a change this year. As for our other newcomers, we have The Exorcism with Russell Crowe, which confusingly has nothing to do with The Pope’s Exorcist, as its reportedly been on the shelf since…2019? Sheesh. It barely made it to $2 million. Also opening was Thelma, the long-delayed Thelma and Louise sequel which reveals that only Thelma survived the fall. It also made $2 million. 2024 is truly becoming the year of the $2 million opening.

Elsewhere, Bad Boys for Life is still going strong, while The Garfield Movie continues to impress with its legs. With a drop of only 24%, there’s now a possibility that it could cross the $100 million mark. Furiosa, meanwhile, is going to cross the finish line with under $70 million in the bank. Ouch.
