This week, it’s a lovely day to die historic on the Fury Road as we get the release of Furiosa: A Max Max Saga. It a prequel spin-off to Mad Max: Fury Road, this time with Anya Taylor-Joy stepping in the shoes of the Bag of Nails herself.

Movie spin-offs are a fairly recent trend. Sure, in the 80’s you had your Red Sonjas and your Supergirls. Lately, though, studios have placed a strong emphasis on established movie brands.

It didn’t take long for it to be everywhere. Spin-offs of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Despicable Me, and The Conjuring universe have become big business. Sometimes they’re just out there to remind you to visit a themed land in an LA area theme park.

Sometimes, a spin-off can aim for far higher than its humble origins. It can be argued that Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is far superior to any of the Shrek films it spun off from. And there are times when the Creed films hit the heights of the Rocky films that preceded it.

And sometimes you get Morbius or Madame Web. Movies only good for the memes.

Bonus prompt: what is your favorite movie spin-off?
