2024 Met Gala Red Carpet Discussion Thread

This thread is focused on discussing the red carpet fashion at the 2024 Met Gala.

First, a few historical notes about the Gala itself:

  • The Met Gala, first held in 1948, is an annual fundraising gala raising money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Per Vogue, the Met Gala is the Institute’s “primary source of funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements.”
  • Last year’s Gala raised close to $22 million for the Institute.
  • The Gala was first held in 1948, and is invitation-only. Attendees are invited from a range of cultural, social, sport, and political fields.
  • Most attendees do not own the outfits they wear to the gala; they are borrowed from design houses or designed for the event.

Now, a few details about this year’s exhibit and gala theme:

  • Per Vogue: “The 2024 Met Gala will celebrate the opening of The Costume Institute’s new spring exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The exhibition—which will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 10th to September 2nd this year—will spotlight 250 items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, including some very rarely seen in public before. All of the works will be displayed in entirely new ways—utilizing elements such as video animation, CGI, AI, and more.”
  • This year’s red carpet theme is “The Garden of Time”, named after a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. You can read the short story here.
