If things go well, I should be out and about in Detroit around now. Cautiously optimistic about the bike travel schedule this spring and summer and hoping today’s journey (probably scouting Southwest or the North End and environs) makes a solid start to the riding season. Hoping it helps with my creative rut recently; while these invariably pass at some point, they’re never fun to live through. It’s nothing terribly existential or even bad (possibly just the reverse!), just a lot of extraneous stuff on my mind.

That said, catching up with some “unfinished business” with these two illustrations, Vespertine Memoir and Hazard Pylodictine. One was a revised version of the Christmas card picture I’d planned for my ex-girlfriend before she broke up with me (the proximate spark for my artistic “career” in the first place)—we’re on good terms (though we haven’t talked in ages) and there are no lingering issues, but I thought it would have made a good picture and didn’t want the idea to go to waste. The other’s a salute to my workplace’s brief obsession with “Okie noodling” several years back.

Today’s header was a composite sketch from the Tahrir encampment on the University of Michigan’s storied “Diag” that’s been there the past few weeks. Like many students and locals, I’m broadly supportive but have mixed feelings about the particulars. Nevertheless, it’s been pretty chill; I frequently pass by on my bike (now that the weather’s nicer, I’ll often use the Diag as a long detour to and from work to refresh, recharge, and pick up) and the police presence has been omnipresent but (to my eyes, at least) relatively unobtrusive. We’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks; I’m planning on getting a proper sketch Wednesday (maybe today if I get back soon enough) and graduation’s this weekend.

How’s your work going?
