The 4/23 Day Thread Salutes Senn High Alum Harvey Korman

I graduated from Senn High School in 1980. Located on Chicago’s North Side, Senn is a fairly typical inner-city public high school, except for the fact that a lot of famous and semi-famous people graduated from there. Today let’s meet one that will really crack you up: comedian Harvey Korman, class of ’43.

After graduating from Senn Harvey served in the U.S. Navy. He then studied at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. He got his first TV role in 1959 on The Donna Reed Show, and after that he worked steadily as a character actor, mostly in television, including providing the voice of The Great Gazoo on The Flintstones.

In 1967 Harvey got his big break when he was cast on The Carol Burnett Show, which established him as a major comic actor. Carol Burnett didn’t reshoot sketches where actors started laughing, leading to some memorable moments for Harvey, who was infamous for breaking character, especially when working with costar Tim Conway.

After the Carol Burnett show Harvey continued to work steadily, appearing in masterpieces such as Blazing Saddles

and the Star Wars Holiday Special

Harvey passed away in 2008, at the age of 81.
