The Wednesday Politics Thread is Out of the Loop

In search of a header topic, I thought “Longform.org always does a great job highlighting interesting pieces. I bet I can find something there.”

And then I went to Longform and found that they stopped recommending articles nearly two years ago, thanks to the rise of paywalls on news websites. Shows how frequently I used it! But the Longform reddit persists, and its community shares interesting articles, so I thought I’d highlight a few pieces of in-depth journalism posted there.

Jonathan Haidt published a piece in The Atlantic recently which drew a lot of attention, with the headline “End the Phone-Based Childhood Now.” Haidt argues that phones are damaging mental health of Gen Z. If that article is paywalled, you may instead want to read Politico’s interview with him on the topic.

Also in Politico, we’ve got “From ‘I Love You’ to ‘Asshole’: How Joe Gave Up on Bibi” which traces the unfolding fallout of Israel’s actions in Gaza, Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership, and Joe Biden’s mounting frustration.

In The Nation, Elie Mystal writes about the Supreme Court’s growing power and ways to combat that. This was shared yesterday here in the PT, and I thought it was worth reupping.

This month marks 4 years since COVID-19 became a pandemic and caused lockdowns throughout the world. Looking back, Undark magazine asks whether or not evidence-based medicine and public are compatible. The article explores the tension between the slow movement of rigorous research and the rapid response that public health sometimes requires.

A difficult read from the NYTimes Magazine explores the question of whether or not you can diagnose a child with psychopathy. This is a tough one, so I encourage you to proceed with care.

And for something lighter to close out the morning with, Slam Magazine has a profile on Caitlin Clark.

Hope you find these interesting! Be kind and thoughtful today. Cheers.
