Howdy, friends. Our bird this week is one of those where it looks spectacular but I couldn’t find a ton of info about it. The white-booted racket-tail is absolutely tiny, with males weighing a mere 2.5 to 2.7 g (0.088 to … Continue reading The WPT Is Mostly Tail
Howdy, friends. Birds are back and I have got a fluffy little tyrant for you. The cinnamon flycatcher is a member of the tyrannidae family of flycatchers, so named because an 18th century naturalist called one member of the family … Continue reading The WPT in: Hooray, WordPress Let Me In
Howdy, friends. I’m afraid that between performance evaluation season at work and Broccoli’s teeny-tiny medical emergency (he’s fine), I am unable to bring you a new bird this week. Be kind to yourselves and others, make the mods’ job easy, … Continue reading The WPT was Busy this Week
Howdy, friends. This week we are continuing our occasional survey of South American contingas, with our new subject, the white-tipped plantcutter. Our new little friend weighs merely 30 to 57 g (1.1 to 2.0 oz) and is18 to 19.5 cm (7.1 … Continue reading The WPT is Back on Cotingas
Howdy, friends. This week we are talking about the Inca jay, a close relative of the green jay we talked about a couple of weeks ago. Although they look similar, recent studies have shown sufficient differences on a genetic level … Continue reading The WPT is Onomatopoeic
Howdy friends. This week we are talking about another Embertine OT post, the green jay. These birds live in southern Texas and the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico including the Yucatan peninsula, as well as south into Belize, Guatemala … Continue reading The WPT has been at this a While
Howdy, friends. This week I thought we would take a break from cotingas and talk about a bird Embertine posted in the open thread a few days ago. That bird is the ocellated turkey, native to Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula and … Continue reading The WPT Does Not Gobble
Howdy, friends. Our bird this week is another cotinga, the pompadour cotinga. It is named after a French noblewoman whose favorite color was purple, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour, aka Madam Pompadour. The pompadour cotinga lives in large sections … Continue reading The WPT Couldn’t Find a Joke
Howdy, friends. This weekend we continue our tour of the enchantingly colorful but poorly documented cotingas. This week’s bird is the chestnut-crested cotinga. Like one of our other recent subjects, it lives in narrow bands of rainforest, this time in … Continue reading The WPT has not been Detailed
Howdy, friends. Our bird this week is as brightly colored as it is instructible. The purple-breasted cotinga is native to Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. It has a disjunct distribution, which means that its range is … Continue reading The WPT has a Placeholder Title
Howdy, friends. Our bird this week is from the same family as last week’s subject, the long-wattled umbrellabird. Both are in the family Contigidae and while browsing through member species, I knew I needed to bring more of these striking birds to … Continue reading The WPT is Elusive, Unobtrusive
Howdy, friends. Our bird this week was suggested by SheleetaHam. The long-wattled umbrellabird is a member of the Cotinga family, a large family of Central and South American birds with dizzying colors we are sure to cover in the future. … Continue reading The WPT Selects for Jerks
Howdy, friends, Birds are back, I thank you all for enduring our collective nightmare of meticulous commentary someone didn’t throw together while working at the circulation desk. Seriously though, thanks to Uve for a thoughtful header two weeks ago. Our … Continue reading The WPT is Pleasingly Speckled
Howdy, friends. No birds this week, I’m afraid. If you’ve found yourself in the open thread in the past few weeks you may know that I had a couple of members of my team quit recently, so its all talking … Continue reading The WPT is Birdless. Repeat. Birdless.
(Due to a scheduling snafu, this header was originally published for a few hours three weeks ago. Here it is again.) Our bird this week was inspired by an item I saw in the news. The crested ibis, our subject … Continue reading The WPT is Back, Baby! (The Return)
Howdy, friends. Between work popping off an having to plan for our trip, I wasn’t able to put together a new bird for you this week. Fear not, that header about the Asian ibis that was briefly up a few … Continue reading The WPT is on Vacation
Howdy, friends. It’s time for more birds. Our bird this week was unwittingly suggested by The Inscrutable Avoaleph, who posted a picture of the Kalij pheasant in the open thread last week. This bird is native to the Himalayan foothills, … Continue reading The WPT Has Many Relationships
Howdy, friends. This week’s selection was suggested by a friend and colleague who follows along with the WPT via pictures of birds I leave saved to the desktop of various circulation desk computers. Our bird this week is the magpie-lark, … Continue reading The WPT Asks that You not Throw Anything
Howdy, friends. Our bird this week is the crested honey buzzard, which like our subject last week is a member of the Perninae subfamily of raptors. It is larger than its European relative, and like the European honey buzzard, is very … Continue reading The WPT Continues Its Indifference
Howdy, friends. I hope everyone is keeping it together, I know the news has been a lot lately. Our bird this week was suggested by Art Cop Vandelay. I’m writing it up at the circulation desk, but that still feels … Continue reading The WPT Don’t Care
Howdy, friends. I had big plans to write up a header about Art Cop Vandelay’s suggestion of the honey vultures, but I am finally on my long-awaited “Mrs Killsock is healthy enough to be home alone” vacation, and of all … Continue reading The WPT Posts from the Road
