God Halloween sucks at the box office.
We are long past the days where we had an annual Saw or Paranormal Activity opening to keep the holiday weekend healthy. Instead, potential moviegoers regularly choose to stay home, making Halloween one of the absolute worst Hollywood periods of the year.
Our number one movie—by a nose—is You Can See Everything, which may or may not be a documentary, may or may not actually star Elizabeth Holmes, and I may or may not be an actual Scrat. This is strictly a movie for the hipsters, as the young folk are flocking to this one to see what all the fuss is about in spite of its insane three hour runtime. For those who care, this weekend marks the first time since 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11 the genre has lead the box office. You Can See Everything has currently embezzled $64 million from audiences.
In second place is last week’s champion Clayface, which is somehow both a hit and a miss at the same time. The good news is it’s a great movie that audiences and critics are enjoying, and its reported budget of $30 million ensures it will be profitable. The bad news is…the DCU is kind of a mess right now. It barely feels connected and moviegoers would be forgiven for not even realizing Clayface was part of it. And sadly that doesn’t build anticipation for future releases, regardless of how good Clayface is. Next up for the DCU is the Supes sequel Man of Tomorrow. After that, there…are currently no confirmed feature films in production.
Also falling into the “kind of a hit” category is Wildwood, which thankfully saw a decent hold this weekend after a disappointing opening last week. That being said, the PG-13 stop-motion epic cost as much as $100 million to make (maybe more). Granted, Laika’s only made one true box office hit to date, which is obviously Coraline (I went to Borderlands in theaters instead of the 2024 3D re-release of that film, by the way. Not one of my smartest decisions). So they aren’t in this for the money. The problem is…well, money still matters.
