Sportacados Discussion Thread for October 28-29, 2026

This is the Sportacados Discussion Thread, for talking about all things sports! Feel free to live-chat games, talk about the latest news and rumours, discuss sports history, and anything else that relates to watching other grown adults throw or hit a ball. Hateration is allowed, but try to keep it within the realm of light banter.

News and Results

  • Stan Wawrinka played his final tennis match yesterday, losing to Jiri Lehecka in the Basel Open in his home country of Switzerland. Wawrinka was one of the most “unbeatable on his day” athletes ever, winning three Grand Slams in one of the most difficult eras and being the only man to beat Djokovic and Nadal in the same major. I’m a little emotional because almost all of the big names from when I started watching tennis are retired now, save for Djokovic and the Williams sisters traveling roadshow.
  • Harry Kane won the Ballon d’Or, the top individual prize in soccer, during a very long gala last night. Kane is the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001, following a season where he scored 61 goals for Bayern Munich and led England to the semifinals of the World Cup. Alexia Putellas won the women’s trophy, while Spain and Barcelona dominated the other awards.
  • After falling behind 2-1, the Golden State Valkyries have stormed back to lead the WNBA Finals 3-2 in what has been a defensively intense series. To close the series out, they will face the ultimate challenge of getting work done in the morning, as Game 6 is hosted at 9:30 AM Pacific time due to arena booking difficulties.
