Optional Discussion Topic: Injury and Illness

Maybe your character broke their leg, got mauled in a bear attack, was shot by alien forces attempting to take the station. Maybe they have cancer or an unknown mystery illness. Injuries and illnesses can add drama to a story, but if it’s unrealistic, it can make things look silly. He was shot twelve times and then took down the army single handedly? They’re wasting away from an illness that’s quite treatable and gives only mild symptoms? How do you make this realistic enough that readers aren’t rolling their eyes?
