You are now entering Ad Space, a realm of commercials, brought before us so we might examine how they work, and discuss why we both love and hate them so. So it is written …
I have never watched the television series 9-1-1, nor either of its spinoffs, 9-1-1: Lone Star and 9-1-1: Nashville. Heck, until recently, I only had the most peripheral awareness that they even existed. From what little I absorbed about them through cultural osmosis, they didn’t sound like my kind of shows. Dramas about 911 first responders? That sort of grounded, professionals-at-work story isn’t my usual cup of tea.
But I may need to rethink that assessment, ’cause I was recently shown this 9-1-1: Nashville promo on Hulu, and this thing is fucking bugnuts!
I mean, wow! There is so much ludicrousity crammed into these thirty seconds.
City streets fill with lava, which the characters casually refer to as “the volcano thing”. They discover a baby trapped inside a building’s piping, and their response is, “Another pipe baby?” Only thing that unsettles them even a little is when a psychopath out for revenge unleashes the Ten Plagues of Egypt on Nashville.
As a fan of goofy, over-the-top, I-can’t-believe-I-just-saw-that television like The Magicians or Legends of Tomorrow, this promo has me rethinking my casual dismissal of the 9-1-1 franchise. I wasn’t interested in a grounded drama about first responders, but First Responders vs. The Abominable Dr. Phibes? Sign me up!
