The Avocado Movie Club #59: Banned From Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family (2009)

Welcome to the Movie Club! This week’s movie is Toshikazu Nagae’s horror mockumentary, Banned From Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family!

This appears to be the film’s poster although I am not sure of its source!

Banned From Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family stars Veronica Addison, a person who may or may not go by that name and is credited as one of the directors of the film but may also be fictitious, as a Canadian documentary host in Japan. The movie is framed as a documentary, where she is following a large family in Japan, although the documentary’s rather innocuous framing does little to hide the family’s dark secrets.

A part of a larger Banned From Broadcast found footage TV series, Saiko! The Large Family first aired in Japan on July 11, 2009. And truthfully, it’s really hard to find any more information about it beyond that! From what I can gather via a Japanese wikipedia page, the series was produced by Fuji TV and premiered in 2003, with entries ranging from single half hour episodes to feature length films, and they were released rather sporadically. Apparently this is also the sequel of sorts to another episode, and you can find all of them online if you are willing to search a bit.

Up Next: Spooky season will wrap up with Frank De Felitta’s made for TV horror film Dark Night of the Scarecrow on Oct 30 at 12PM EST! And once again, we have it available on YouTube, but if you want to view it more traditionally you can watch it for free on Blood Stream just about anywhere in the world it seems, so long as you make an account. It’s also on Prime Video in the UK, and if you’re in the US it’s one of those movies that’s on all of those b-movie streaming services; Fawesome, Tubi, Midnight Pulp, etc. Here is the YouTube link if you don’t want to go through any additional trouble though:
