- The NHL kicked off their season unusually early, with the Carolina Hurricanes lifting their championship banner at 5 PM local on a Tuesday in September, then losing 1-0 to the Florida Panthers. North of the border, Montreal beat their rival Toronto, while last season’s cellar dwellers Vancouver Canucks shocked the Edmonton Oilers with an overtime win. Somehow, my Sens don’t play until Saturday.
- We have our first team eliminated from the WNBA playoffs, and surprisingly it’s the Minnesota Lynx, who dominated the regular season. The Liberty (far from a normal 8 seed) swept Minnesota in two games behind great performances by Breanna Stewart. This is the first time an 8 seed has beat a 1 seed since the current format was introduced in 2021.
- The Manchester City scandal continues to grow, as the Premier League has released their own report finding the team guilty not just of exceeding allowed spending by up to $900 million but of systemic fraud to hide this gap. The club overstated its income, created sham agreements with commercial partners, and refused to cooperate with investigators. Everyone with half a brain knew that Man City’s UAE-based owners were funneling state wealth into the club, but the extent of the deception is still pretty shocking. A punishment or sanction is yet to be announced, but could have a huge effect on the European soccer ecosystem.
