• The NFL kicked off its season with two mid-week standalone games. In a rematch of the previous Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks reaffirmed their dominance despite losing starting quarterback Sam Darnold (with the help of a few misthrows from the Patriots’ Drake Maye.) The league also had its first regular-season game in Australia, with the San Francisco 49ers defeating the much-hyped LA Rams.
• Elena Rybakina will be the new WTA World No. 1 next week after raching the US Open semifinals. Rybakina is the thirtieth women to hold the top spot on the rankings since they were introduced in 1975. She will also play the tournament fighter against the women she replaced on top, Aryna Sabalenka, on Saturday afternoon.
• The first matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase (a phrase that is the sports equivalent of “cellar door”) took place across three real-life days. All five English teams won their first matches, including Liverpool over Atletico Madrid, as did the major continental powers in Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich and Paris St. Germain. Debutants Como got an impressive 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, which ended up being the only win for an Italian team during this matchday.
