• Ben Shelton defeated former multiple slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open’s latest finishes, winning at 3:33 am after a day full of matches that went the distance. Frances Tiafoe also won his quarterfinal, meaning that there will be an American in the men’s singles final for the first time since Andy Roddick 20 years ago. Personally, I am enjoying the American men’s Slam drought, but also don’t want Zverev to win another major, so go Alexander Blockx I guess?
• Aaron Judge returned to the Yankees lineup after a 99-day injury stint. Judge went 0 for 3 in the game but will be a much-needed injection of offense as New York prepare for the playoffs and maybe chase the AL East title.
• After several months of impasse, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to an agreement with quarterback Baker Mayfield for a three-year extension worth $165 million. This will provide a stable home for the talented but mercurial Mayfield. Defending AFC champions the New England Patriots also signed cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a four-year, $135 million extension ahead of the season opener tonight.
