News and Results

• Irish boxer Katie Taylor had her retirement fight in front of a crowd of 84, 000 at Croke Park. She defeated Flora Pili by unanimous decision to become an undisputed champion in her third weight class. Taylor retires with a 26-1 record, an Olympic gold medal, and a room full of pro belts. While I think she benefited from generous judging on a few occasions, Taylor is undeniably one of the best female fighters ever, contributed hugely to the professionalization of women’s boxing, and was a class act the whole time.
• Another big attendance mark for women’s sports ended sourly on Sunday night. 43, 000 showed up to watch the NCAA women’s volleyball game between Nebraska and Missouri at Wrigley Field, but it turned out that playing a volleyball match on a wood court outdoors wasn’t the best idea. The game was delayed and eventually postponed after just 18 points when players were slipping and sliding due to condensation. They did manage to get in the first game of the doubleheader, with Kentucky beating Penn State.
• American track star Masai Russell completed a perfect season in the Diamond League this weekend by winning the 100m hurdles at the Diamond League finals in Brussels. Russell set a meet record in all seven events she competed in, and broke the world record at that distance in Zurich last week. She still has the new “Ultimate” championship event next weekend to go, but I think it’s safe to say that if you need someone to hurdle something, she’s your woman.
• One of the craziest soccer matches you’ll see all season took place in Milan this Saturday, between last year’s Serie A top two of Inter and Napoli. Napoli went up 2-0 with a quick pair of goals, but Inter managed to come all the way back and win 3-2, all in the second half. Elsewhere, Arsenal won a London derby against Chelsea 2-1 to stay perfect on the season, while Bayern was held to a goalless draw by Schalke 04.
