In thinking about Olivia Rodrigo’s recent Daisy Chain Fields music festival, I thought it would be fun to find some live video from the original Lilith Fair. Anyway long story short, I wanted something with nighttime vibes and decided on this, which isn’t from the Lilith Fair, but does feature one of its headliners, Natalie Merchant.

Here she sings three songs–“Carnival,” “Jealousy” and “Wonder”–from her solo debut Tigerlily, as part of the VH1 Crossroads Concert at the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1995. Jennifer Turner’s guitar playing goes pretty hard, and Merchant even does a bit of her spinny-dancing, which I understand she was wont to do in the olden days.

Interesting band trivia, the bassist and drummer, Barrie Maguire and Peter Yanowitz, were original members of The Wallflowers. After that band’s first album failed to ignite and most of the lineup turned over, Maguire and Yanowitz joined guitarist Turner to help Merchant record Tigerlily and kick off her post-10,000 Maniacs career.
