Spider-Man vs. ACME — Weekend Box Office Report for August 28th-August 30th, 2026

Spider-Man is making money. What else is there to even say about anymore? It’s a lock for $900 million stateside although beating The Force Awakens is no longer a certainty. But who cares if it doesn’t? Brand New Day might be the most unexpected mega-blockbuster of recent box office memory. Its success is as impressive as it is confusing.

But Peter Parker isn’t the only one with a reason to smile. Coyote Vs. Acme after one of the craziest production histories you can imagine victoriously made its way to theaters this weekend, earning a healthy $15.9 million. That’s the best opening ever for the independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment, and has already outgrossed last year’s other nearly abandoned Looney Tunes flick The Day the Earth Blew Up. Critics absolutely adore Coyote and audiences are having fun too with an excellent “A” CinemaScore. It’s always nice to see the good guys win.

Opening way below initial projections that had it in the $25 million+ range is The Dog Stars, the latest from Ridley Scott. This one is apparently a slow burn which reviews were quick to bury, but really, Disney never expected this to be a massive hit when they gave it such a late August date. But you know what? Good for Scott. The guy simply loves making movies and probably won’t stop doing so until the day he dies, so you gotta admire his dedication. Next up for him is Treasure Island with Hugh Jackman as Long John Silver, which should be a much easier sell than Dog Stars.

On the other side of the coin, Buddy absolutely clobbered tracking with a fantastic $5.5 million on only 1,250 screens. Outside of advertising on Adult Swim, almost all of Buddy’s marketing was done online through a brilliant viral campaign that treated it like a real children’s show from the 90s. It’s a niche concept sold to a niche audience perfectly, and they showed up for the demented fun. Hopefully Buddy expands soon so more people have the chance to discover its madness (also, it seems many theaters didn’t have matinee showtimes for this one. Were they worried about clueless parents taking their kids?).

Next weekend Onslaught opens, but the number one movie is going to be…The Odyssey. Or maybe it will just be Spider-Man again. But Nolan’s film has been showing very sturdy legs. We’ll see what happens.
