You’ll never guess what our number one movie is this week. Just kidding, it’s Spider-Man again. With $854 million in the spider-bank, it will surpass the domestic gross of Avengers: Endgame by the end of the week, something absolutely no one thought would happen a month ago. Stateside the final $934 million of The Force Awakens remains within its spider-reach, however the $2.9 million global record of Avatar is going to be safe (at least until the re-release of Endgame in October, although I’m not sure if four minutes of new footage is really going to be enough to lure audiences back at full price).

Meanwhile Sony has the number two slot as well with Insidious: Out of the Further scaring up a healthy $25 million. That’s not bad for the sixth entry in a horror franchise which is now 15 years old (sheesh!). Unlike the Conjuring series, Insidious hasn’t really had any iconic villains like The Nun and Annabelle (unless you count that Darth Maul cosplaying demon?), so the big selling point here was “the dead invade our world!” So…zombies basically? Also, let James Wan out of director jail already!

Elsewhere, Jason Statham played against type in Mutiny, and audiences just weren’t ready to see him in such a different role here. They expect Gnomeo & Juliet from the man, not whatever violent nonsense this was supposed to be. I respect Statham for trying something a little different, but people only want to see him as a talking garden gnome. Next year’s Jason Statham Gnomes Where I Put My Bike! should be a return to normalcy for the usually one-note actor.

Next weekend we get The Dog Stars, which sounds like a Pixar movie about a canine rock band, but sadly isn’t. Also Coyote vs. Acme finally opens, as well as another film I’m very excited about, Buddy. Unfortunately the latter has only late night showtimes at my theater…why?
