In 2016, beloved Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip announced that leader singer and lyricist Gord Downie had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Subsequently they also announced a tour – they would be playing 15 shows across Canada in support of their new album as well as a farewell, as it was unlikely that Downie would be able to perform with the group again.

The final show of the tour took place on August 20, 2016, in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario.

The show was broadcast by the CBC and was watched by 11.7 million people, nearly a third of the Canadian population. After a nearly two and a half hour set, they closed the evening with a rendition of “Ahead By a Century,” one of their most popular songs. Downie would pass away a little over a year later, on October 17, 2017.

Despite the sad circumstances, the show and tour is fondly remembered as a cultural touchstone in Canada. It’s rare that a band gets to close their career with such a large-scale celebration of their work, especially one that was watched by so many people. The CBC will be rebroadcasting the entire show on August 22 at 7 pm local time in honour of the ten-year anniversary.
