News & Results

* The Protect College Sports Act did not advance before Congress’s August recess, leaving college sports unprotected. It is now doubtful whether this bill will pass before the 2026 midterm elections (sorry to get all PT on you here.) Personally, most of the changes in the bill sound benign, but anytime you can get the SEC, Big Ten and Congressional Republicans to agree on something I reach for my gun. However, the Senate did pass a resolution recognizing Missouri’s 1960 national football championship.

* The semifinals for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations are set, with Morocco taking on Cameroon and Algeria battling Malawi, both on Wednesday. This also means that these four teams have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year, with Algeria and Malawi making the tournament for the first time. The CONCACAF Under-20 championship also reached its conclusion, with Mexico beating the US dos a cero, and both teams qualifying for the 2028 Olympic men’s football tournament.

* Canada won the Under-18 Hlinka-Gretzky hockey tournament with a thumping 8-1 win over the US, no doubt taking out a lot of pent-up national frustration. The hockey world will go back into hibernation until the NHL season starts up in… September? That can’t be right.

* Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering won the Women’s Tour de France for the second time with a final-stage victory. The women’s race apparently has a different format, which sounds more exciting, but they don’t get to ride into Paris at the end? Cycling is weird, as evidenced by a Canadian racer almost getting taken out by a person in a panda costume, which sadly I couldn’t find a good picture of.
