The Spain team lifting the trophy, with Donald Trump edited out and replaced by the old nectarine World Cup mascot.

Sportacados Discussion Thread for July 20/21, 2026

This is the Sportacados Discussion Thread, for talking about all things sports! Feel free to live-chat games, talk about the latest news and rumours, discuss sports history, ask newbie questions, and anything else that relates to watching other grown adults throw or hit a ball. Hateration is allowed, but try to keep it within the realm of light banter.

I had so much fun talking about the World Cup, Grand Slams and NBA/NHL playoffs with y’all I thought I would start doing a thread for more of the day-in day-out sports discussion while also avoiding clogging up the front page with event threads. Right now I’m working on a Mon/Wed/Fri schedule but we will see how successful it is. Let me know if there are any leagues or sports you want added to the schedule.

News & Results

* Spain won the World Cup in a 1-0 final against Argentina that was not nearly as close as that scoreline suggests. This is their second time lifting the trophy. Kylian Mbappe took home the Golden Boot while the winning team’s Rodri and Unai Lopez got the Golden Ball and Glove respectively. England won third place in a pants-on-head crazy game that ended 6-4.

* Ryan Fox won the British Open. I don’t really follow golf, but congratulations to him!

* Great Britain’s Josh Kerr set a new world record by running a mile in 3:42.66 at a Diamond League event. The previous record had stood for 27 years, so that’s pretty good!

* The NBA trade carousel keeps spinning with a deal that lands the Hawks Canadian bad boy Lu Dort, Oklahoma City yet more second-round picks for their vast hoard, and Dallas Mavericks former no. 1 pick Zacharie Rissacher, of whom the only notable thing you can say is that he was a former no. 1 pick.

*Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel will be resigning at the end of the year. I don’t see why, other than that scandal, and the other scandal, and two coaches leaving immediately after winning national championships.

* One of my favourite current boxers, Kenshiro Teraji, defeated Israel Gonzalez for the WBO Flyweight Title in Japan this morning, becoming a world champion in his third weight class. Yes, he does come out to the Fist of the North Star theme song.

* In other Japanese fighting news, MMA organization RIZIN announced the headliners for its huge stadium show this September. Social media star Mikuru Asakura will take on MMA legend and very strange person Shinya Aoki, while RIZIN featherweight champion Razhadali Shaidulloev and PFL champ AJ McKee will face off with both belts on the line.
