The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (06/30)

Movieacados! Well today is Jun 30 and as a proud Canadiacado (more specifically Newfieacado) it is close enough to Canada Day to celebrate Canada for this weeks Weekly Movie Thread. Now I am pretty sure I did this last year, but what can I say I am a sucker for CanCon (actually in reality CanCon regulations tend to go too far and bug me a lot of the time even though I do see the necessity for them).

So take off hoser, doing this twice in a row counts as a double double. OK, got that out of my system, back to my earlier point for those who don’t know CanCon are regulations for doing business in Canada that there has to be a minimum percentage of Canadian Content produced, so the CBC has to produce a minimum 60% Canadian Content. Ironically this was exploited by SCTV with their Great White North sketches featuring Bob and Doug Mackenzie. Initially they went over the top sarcastic with all the super Canadian references to make a point, but the CRTC (which is responsible for upholding CanCon here) actually okayed it unironically the ixtra super Canadian filler material ended up being super popular and a beloved bit was born, and eventually they even got a movie in Strange Brew. Similar to this a lot of funding from the Canadian Government movies often have to up their CanCon game. Men With Brooms went the Great White North way and added herds of beavers to their movie and got increased funding (beavers don’t herd). So it seems I do have a love/hate relationship with CanCon after all. It is somewhat necessary to keep our film industries from being absorbed and overrun by our southern neighbour and yes the CRTC can get really silly with their enforcement of the regulations, but at the end of the day that have us a wider Bob and Doug audience so I have to be happy with that.

Bringing this back around to a weekly prompt: Talk about movie Canadiana. Candian movies obviously, but also actors, directors, movies set in Canada, characters, or anything else you can think of and it counts.
