89X is an alt-rock station in the Windsor and Detroit markets. They broadcast in that format from 1991 to 2020, when the station changed formats and made an ill-advised detour into country music. In 2025, that experiment was declared a failure and 89X returned with the same format and even some of the same on-air talent. I’ve absolutely loved having the station back. They play a mix of music no other radio station in the area does (The Tragically Hip! Sloan! Our Lady Peace!), and the DJs are unabashedly local and free to take some occasionally strange detours. You want to spend multiple segments on the morning commute talking about fishflies? Sure, why not?
One song that’s been in heavy rotation recently to promote their upcoming Birthday Bash concert is Fionn’s “Blow”. Fionn is Canadian twin sisters Alanna and Brianne Finn-Morris, and the song pulls off the rarest of feats – it’s catchy, it’s a blast to sing, and it’s actually funny.
If you like that song, I Put My Makeup On from the same album is also worth a listen.
Have fun posting!
