This week’s topic: Historical topics that dumb people need to shut up about. Inspired by a mini-thread in the Politics Thread the other day, what are some historical topics that people apparently can’t talk about without seeming like morons? r/AskHistorians has been fertile ground for my encountering these takes, but I’m specifically inspired by a truly nuts argument I found in an old Lawyers, Guns and Money post. There, several posters spent hours posting dumb, ideologically simplistic takes about the Civil Rights Movement (basically the old integration vs. Black Power argument, as articulated by angry white nerds on the internet), to the point where I audibly groaned at the stupidity on display. Then again, anything adjacent to the ’60s is so encrusted in myth and ideology (don’t mention Vietnam!) that when an argument breaks out, it might just be best to walk away.
