Happy Monday, folks, and welcome to the Weekly Video Games Thread!
On Sunday, I tried the demo for the upcoming Star Fox and was instantly caught off-guard, not by a meteor or an enemy, but a control setting. My father was the first person to play the demo, and during the tutorial, he had trouble with one of the default settings and had to reverse it. That setting? “Invert Y-axis,” which is to say that in this ship combat game, you tilt the control stick down to simulate flying upward and vice versa. For him, it went against his base instincts, and he had to change it. For me, though, it was incredibly hard. Even after trying to work with it, I gave up and switched to the default. That beautiful, beautiful, inverted Y-axis.
Perhaps this is a result of my childhood, where N64 games regularly used this to simulate the physical aspect of aiming or piloting, but it’s the most natural thing for me. Without it on, the game felt like an unplayable gelatin (and with it on, it felt like a very smooth and fun game I’d probably like to buy on sale in the future). However, I am more than aware of the raucous acrimony over this topic. So I’d like you all to fight over today’s prompt: do you prefer for the Y-Axis to be inverted in controls, or don’t you?
And, as always, what did you play this weekend?
