Moviacados! When it comes to pop culture meeting the classics there has always been one phenomenon that has always annoyed me. You ever have the one thing that everyone has just agreed to follow and you are sitting on the sidelines just thinking (ore perhaps yelling) “This is not how this should be!”. I of course am leading into what will be this week’s topic of discussion: Death in the movies. Death being the personification (usually in a black robe carrying a scythe and being all menacing) and not just characters who happen to die during the story.

Death gets a bad rap for the most part, as we often have negative associations and feelings towards the idea of death that plays out in a lot of stories where the Grim Reaper is often either a villain, or at the very least shown in a villainous context. And I am sure a lot of you would agree that Death as a character can and sometimes even is shown to be so much more than that. Death is a necessary part of life (no matter what weirdo almost billionaires would have you believe) and as such can add wit, wisdom, context and full on laughter to a movie if they are particularly well written/portrayed. Death is a great way to transition key plot points, scenes and move the story along so there is no need to always be looking towards that negatively.

So now I think I set this up pretty good to ask: What is your favourite personification of Death/Grim Reaper from the movies? For the purposes of this prompt Gods of Death/Underworld also count (Think Hades from Hercules), as does other stand ins who might not technically meet the exact criteria of “Death”. Either way have fun and feel free to be creative with answers. And while I am usually down on Death as a villain that is not to say there have not been great and memorable Death villains over the years (see picture above), if you want to talk about villainous Grim Reapers then have at it! This week I am hopefully still with us as I had surgery just six days ago (hench the inspiration for the prompt) but I am not sure how coherent I will be as it is still early in the recovery phase for me so I probably won’t be posting here today, will try to make some reading time though.
