Here are today’s contestants:
– Kaylea Bowers, a technology product manager from Orlando, Florida;
– Alejandro Sobalvarro, a graduate student from Austin, Texas; and
– Peter McFerrin, an energy industry professional from Corona, California. Peter is a five-day champ with winnings of $116,198.
Jeopardy!
2016: 10 YEARS AGO // CHILDREN’S VERSE // 3 “G” CAPABILITY // GAMING THE SYSTEM // A CATEGORY OF CATEGORIES // WE NEED A TENDER MOMENT
DD1 – $400 – CHILDREN’S VERSE – A Robert Browning poem about this legendary figure begins, “Hamelin town’s in Brunswick / By famous Hanover City” (Peter added $2,400 up to $10,000.)
Scores at first break: Peter $6,400, Alejandro $3,600, Kaylea $600.
Scores entering DJ: Peter $11,200, Alejandro $4,600, Kaylea $1,600.
Double Jeopardy!
UNLIKELY MEETINGS // THAT WORD IS A MOUTHFUL! // PEOPLE FROM U.S. PLACES // THE IRISH IN ENTERTAINMENT // “A.P.” // BIOLOGY
DD2 – $1,200 – PEOPLE FROM U.S. PLACES – An eremite is a hermit; an Oremite lives in this state (With $8,600, Alejandro added $4,000 vs. $14,000 for Peter.)
DD3 – $1,200 – UNLIKELY MEETINGS – John Sayles’ novel “Crucible” depicts an actual meeting between Henry Ford & this muralist, doing a commission in Detroit (On the next clue after DD2, Alejandro improved by $2,600 up to $15,200.)
From second place with just over half of Peter’s score in DJ, Alejandro found the DDs back-to-back and was correct on both. However, he only bet enough to take a short advantage, and Peter quickly took command again to lead into FJ at $24,800 vs. $15,600 for Alejandro and $4,000 for Kaylea.
Final Jeopardy!
21ST CENTURY TV – The title of this series that premiered in 2012 goes back to a colloquial word coined by Alben Barkley’s grandson
Only Peter was correct on FJ, adding $6,401 to win with $31,201 for a six-day total of $147,399.
Final scores: Peter $31,201, Alejandro $1, Kaylea $1.
Wagering strategy: In Alejandro’s position against a five-time champ, going all-in twice on the DDs is the play that would give him the best chance to win. If it doesn’t work out, so be it. As it played out, even if he had done that, Peter would have been close enough to win with his correct response on FJ and Alejandro’s miss.
Correct Qs: DD1 – Who is the Pied Piper? DD2 – What is Utah? DD3 – Who was Diego Rivera? FJ – What is “Veep”?
