Jeopardy! recap for Tue., May 26

Here are today’s contestants:

– Rebecca Joseph, a senior cost accountant from Denver, Colorado;
– Chenfei Lu, a data scientist from San Francisco, California; and
– Chris D’Angelo, a content manager from Washington, D.C. Chris is a four-day champ with winnings of $83,600.

Jeopardy!

YEAR OF THE HORSE // “B”ANGERS // ARCHAEOLOGY // AMERICAN AUTHORS // COMMON BONDS // 13-LETTER WORDS

DD1 – $600 – ARCHAEOLOGY – In 2025, 22 massive stone blocks were recovered from the Mediterranean seabed off Egypt, remnants of this ancient wonder (Chris doubled to $9,200.)

Scores at first break: Chris $3,600, Chenfei $3,000, Rebecca $0.

Scores entering DJ: Chris $10,800, Chenfei $4,800, Rebecca $400.

Double Jeopardy!

THE OPERAS OF GIOVANNI ANTONIO KRINGI // 2-WORD MAGAZINE TITLES // OVERSEAS TERRITORIES // FUNNY LADIES // ANAGRAMS OF EACH OTHER // D-DAY

DD2 – $1,200 – 2-WORD MAGAZINE TITLES – It now publishes a large-print edition to go along with its familiar 5.5-inch by 7.5-inch version (From a distant third with $2,000, Rebecca bet $1,000 and missed.)

DD3 – $1,600 – OVERSEAS TERRITORIES – This island found by the Royal Navy in 1767 is still British territory, so mutineers, think twice about heading there (In second with $7,600, Chenfei wagered $2,500 and missed vs. $13,600 for Chris.)

Chris took command with a double-up on DD1, then both opponents found a DD in DJ, bet modestly and missed, so again Chris was all alone into FJ at $19,200 vs. $5,100 for Chenfei and $2,200 for Rebecca.

Final Jeopardy!

FAMOUS LINES FROM LITERATURE – Both the first line & the last line of this 1859 novel begin with “it”

Chris missed FJ and was the only player to do so. He dropped $5,800 to win with $13,400 for a five-day total of $97,000.

Final scores: Chris $13,400, Chenfei $5,167, Rebecca $4,300.

Wagering strategy: Chenfei only bet about a third of his total on DD3, but in the end, his small wager didn’t help him stay in the game after he missed. Meanwhile, if he had gone all-in and was correct, he would have been close enough to win the game on FJ when Chris missed, even if Chenfei wasn’t correct himself. This is why the big bet on DD3 was clearly the correct play, because against a strong champ such as Chris, you’re in terrible shape with a miss on DD3 no matter how much you bet, so you might as well go for it.

Correct Qs: DD1 – What is Lighthouse at Alexandria? DD2 – What is “Reader’s Digest”? DD3 – What is Pitcairn Island? FJ – What is “A Tale of Two Cities”?
