He-Man The Movie Commercial Night Thread (Maybe)

So this is one of those videos where the thumbnail baffled me when I clicked on it. That certainly didn’t look like He-Man! More than half of this upload is from Commander USA’S Groovy Movies, something I literally only just learned about but is apparently quite fondly remembered by those who watched it. “Commander USA”–who sounds like a bootleg G.I. Joe character, or even a non-bootleg G.I. Joe character–was a B-movie host on USA Network during the 1980s when cable television was still in its early days. From what I’ve been able to gather in the five minutes or so of research I put into this (be sure to Buy Me a Coffee for my effort), USA hasn’t archived any of the series online in any capacity. So the only footage available on YouTube is because of fans who preserved it. I tip my hat to you, Commander USA. I’m sure you’d be a better commander than many of our current political figures.

But back to He-Man. This video does eventually get to what got you to click on it in the first place, which is a TV spot for the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. And since the commercial ends with “opening tomorrow!”, I can deduce this aired on August 6th of that year. More importantly, this was just a few weeks before I was born. So there was a He-Man film playing in theaters when I took my first breaths in the world. That’s kind of cool (also, given how much I adore this franchise, it probably surprises at least some of you to know I wasn’t even around back when it was at its most popular).

The ad itself isn’t about showcasing footage from the motion picture so much as it’s about “screaming fans” at what is allegedly some sort of preview screening. It might be the premiere, but it looks way too casual for that. But who knows. But hey, that observation offers more substance than most of what these people are screaming at the top of their lungs. “SKELETOR!” “HE’S BAD!” “HE-MAN IS HOT!” “IT’S LIKE STAR WARS!” None of those are actual opinions of the he-movie y’all supposedly just walked out of.

Have the power tonight, y’all!
