You are now entering Ad Space, a realm of commercials, brought before us so we might examine how they work, and discuss why we both love and hate them so. So it is written …

The insurance company Liberty Mutual has two main ad campaigns. We’ve already looked at their off-kilter take on insurance mascots with Limu Emu (and Doug). Now we turn our eyes to their other campaign, titled Real Liberty Mutual Customers (Except Obviously Not Real) Shill It While Standing On A Pier (Except Obviously A Set) Across From The Statue Of Liberty (Except Obviously Just A Picture) (Except Obviously This Is Not The Official Title).

There are loads of these RLMC(EONR)SIWSOAP(EOAS)AFTSOL(EOJAP)(EOTINTOT) ads, each with different actors doing some (hopefully) funny schtick as they deliver the sales pitch. Here’s a typical example of the form:

And in making so many of these, with so many different actors, Liberty Mutual eventually stumbled upon the best of all commercial spokespeople (except by best, we mean worst).

Something about this deliriously incompetent but overambitious fellow really struck a chord with people … or at least, they thought the words “liberty biberty” were amusing enough, they wanted to hear ’em again. So eventually, Liberty Mutual brought this guy back, slipping ’em sideways into someone else’s RLMC(EONR)SIWSOAP(EOAS)AFTSOL(EOJAP)(EOTINTOT) ad:

And once you’ve got a leading man like this in your roster, the obvious next move is to find ’em a leading lady to get those shipping fires burning:

But, obviously, their greatest triumph came during the epic Liberty Mutual commercial crossover. Forget The Avengers. Forget The Five Doctors. Forget Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. This right here is truly the most epic crossover of the ages, when the Liberty Biberty guy meets Limu Emu (& Doug) Libu Bibu (& Doog).

Is there nothing this god-among-spokespeople can’t do? With so many amazing outings under their belt, who knows what adventures they’ll have between now and the time the ad campaign becomes insufferable.
