Slowly (still) getting back into form, but the typical Michigan spring weather’s helping to hold things at bay a bit (still going to Detroit Thursday, but am unsure whether I’ll be able to make one of my planned bike rides as hoped), as is the annual changeover in our local social fabric (school year’s over and a substantial chunk of our population will be out of town for the summer). Looking back on the year so far and my lack of output and am feeling pretty philosophical about the whole thing.

I’ve been drawing now for over a decade, painting for almost as long, and I feel like I can take the hit as long as I get back on the wagon (I stopped dating my works on my website by month, among other things, as I now have enough of a backlog not to feel self-conscious). This episode’s also triggered some internal wrestles with why and how I do what I do. Painting’s one thing, but when it comes to the inkwork, there are a lot of other considerations, not least my using archaic forms of artistic economy (when I’m not even selling anything for the most part) and my growing alienation from my local society (it’s not hostile or anything, but I have to figure out what it means for what my stuff even means; gathering my thoughts on this and will hopefully blog them, as I haven’t done that in a month or two). Hopefully once I get all this together I’ll be able to restore my foundation.
