The Tabletop Games Thread Gets Hexy (4/29/26)

Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!

Discussion Prompt: A hexcrawl is a way to provide a structure around wilderness exploration and travel in a TTRPG. You generally have a large map overlayed with a hexagon grid. Each hexagon represents a certain area of terrain, and as the party moves from one hex to another, they can encounter wandering monsters, interesting landmarks, dungeons to explore and loot, etc. Weather and environmental affects can also come into play, and losing your path could mean running into something you were not prepared for. As a DM, there’s a lot of prep work that goes into designing a hexcrawl, since your players can travel in any direction. You either need to know what the players will find in every hex or be very good at coming up with things to do on the fly. Luckily, there’s no shortage of resources available for filling in a hexmap, from online random encounter generators to just pulling in whole dungeons from other sources. What tips and tricks do you have for creating and/or running a hexcrawl game?
