The Tabletop Games Thread Laments the Flame Princess (1/21/26)

Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!

Discussion Prompt: Lamentations of the Flame Princess is a “weird fantasy” RPG that is very much in the OSR tradition. It’s a d20-based system, like D&D, but its assumed setting is more of a low-magic fantasy world that is a fair bit darker and more deadly than the standard 5e settings. The characters are mostly human, and can be one of four main classes: Fighter, Magic-User, Cleric, and Specialist. Players can also choose to play one of three Demihuman classes (Dwarf, Elf, or Halfling), but these are exceedingly rare magical creatures whose time in the world is coming to an end. Magic in this game is strange and unpredictable, making casting even low-level spells a potentially dangerous thing to do. Encumbrance rules are important and quite restricting, as carry too many items can severely hamper your movement. A character wearing chain mail and a shield is already considered moderately encumbered, before even accounting for any weapons or other adventuring gear, such as food and water rations.

My group has played Lamentations of the Flame Princess once before, with mixed success, and we’re getting ready to take another crack at it with an adventure inspired by Lovecraft’s “Shadow Over Innsmouth” novella.

What are your thoughts on/experiences with Lamentations of the Flame Princess, or OSR games in general?

If you would like to suggest a prompt or contribute a write-up or discussion topic of your own, let me know in the comments!
